Happiness: well what is it? Who the hell knows? Here are the 31 one happiness’s according to the Society of Happy People: Anticipation, playful, optimistic, love, humour, helpful, relieved, kindness, giving, hopeful, satisfaction, content, blessed, confident, nostalgic, celebrate, honourable, balanced, motivated, amused, enthusiasm, thankful, awestruck, social, joyful, peaceful, cheerful, lively, spiritual, inspired, mellow. Seligman suggested a Pleasant life, an Engaged life, and a Meaningful life. Eudaimonic well-being, is happiness associated with a sense of purpose or a meaning in life and hedonic well-being, which is basic pleasure. There is also Aristotelian ideas of laetus: Happiness in a thing that made me happy; felix: The happiness of comparative advantage; Beatitudo: The happiness that comes from seeing the good in others and doing good for others. Sublime Beatitudo: a reach for fullness and perfection of happiness, of goodness, beauty, truth and love. Or the simple Jennifer Michael Hecht three types of happiness: a moment of happiness, a good day, and a happy life. Others mention gratitude … and on it goes.
One thing that is true is that happiness seems to be left in the lap of the gods. What I think happiness is, what you think it is, what others think it is, is a real mystery? Does what I think about happiness make any difference to how happy I am? What worked yesterday doesn’t work today. Are there rules? Well some might say there are and tell you how to get it, get there, arrive there, make it happen, and approach it. This workshop series wont!
During these workshops, you, your participant colleagues, and I, as group leader, will work psychodramatically to untangle your beliefs and habits around happiness and the happiness of those around you. The group will engage with one another at depth and investigate this important and fundamental area of life. We will all leave richer for the experience and wiser for what we have unearthed and learned.
